Habitat for Humanity Society of Kamloops - Executive Director: Job Summary

The Executive Director (“ED”) provides overall leadership and management of the Habitat for Humanity Society of Kamloops (“the Affiliate”) in accordance with the direction, policies and objectives set by the Affiliate Board of Directors (“the Board”).

The ED raises awareness about Habitat for Humanity within the Kamloops area, and oversees the development and acquisition of the necessary resources (funds, materials, volunteers) to conduct the business of the Affiliate.

Organizational Context:

  • The ED reports to the Chair of the Board or designate.
  • The ED is an ex-officio (non-voting) member of the Board.
  • The ED manages all day-to-day operations of the affiliate, but will involve the Board and/or its committees in any significant decisions or issues.
  • The ED supervises the Affiliate’s staff, and works closely with all volunteers who have significant responsibilities in the business of the Affiliate.
  • The ED has a stewardship role with the Committees of the Board, facilitating and promoting their mandates and activities, assisting and supporting them as required.

Detailed Responsibilities and Duties:

1) General Administration:

• Manage the public accountability of the Affiliate.
• Develop an annual budget for the Affiliate for approval by the Board.
• Authorize expenditures within the budget approved by the Board, and advise the Board of budget  
   variances and expenditure projections.
• Manage the Habitat office and staff.
• Recruit and supervise staff (includes office, site and Restore staff).
Ensure efficient and effective office and Restore administration, filing, and retention of records.
• Develop, implement, maintain and administer the policies and procedures of the Affiliate.

2)  Committee Coordination:

• Support and assist all committees of the Board as needed
• Keep all committees apprised of information relevant to their objectives, and facilitate
  communications between the various committees.
• Provide assistance to any Habitat committee as requested by the committee or the Board.
• Ensure that all committees perform their work in concert with the policies and practices of 
   the Affiliate.
• Alert the Board to serious deficiencies in committee work.

3)  Provide leadership for Fundraising and Public Relations:

• In coordination with the Fundraising Committee, establish a fund raising strategy, and
   assist in its implementation.
• Represent Habitat to interested communities, churches, corporations, foundations, civic
   leaders etc. and promote the visibility of Habitat in the surrounding area.
• Participate in media, promotional and special events.

4)  Board of Directors:

• In coordination with the Executive Committee and the Board, establish and help implement the
   strategic plan of the affiliate.
• Assist and support the development of the Affiliate in line with its strategic plan.
• Assist the Chair of the Board in coordinating the Board activities.
• Introduce new Board members to their responsibilities and obligations.
• Communicate extensively with the Board and its Executive Committee, including regular
   documented reports, to ensure that the Board is kept current with the Affiliate’s business.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Board.
• Inform the Board of all relevant communications.
• Develop and maintain a relationship with the National Office and other Affiliates.

Required Qualifications:

• Proven success and experience in nonprofit administration and fund raising.
Ability to speak effectively in public and to write clearly.
• Ability to lead and motivate staff and volunteers.
• Proven success managing staff members and working with a large numbers of volunteers.
• Excellent skills in relating to people in business, religious, political and low-income communities.
• General familiarity with home construction.
• Ability to manage multiple job demands and organize workload in the allocated time.
• Ability to develop and work effectively with volunteers and staff.
• Familiarity with the Habitat for Humanity affiliate program.
• Availability to work flexible hours including some weekends and evenings.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
